Gucci began with luggage, not perfume. In 1921, Guccio Gucci opened an artisanal travel-goods atelier in Florence, bringing together Tuscan craft and the refined travel culture he had observed while working at London’s Savoy hotel.
The first chapter
Travel, translated by Florentine hands
Before opening the atelier, the founder watched an international clientele arrive at the Savoy with carefully made trunks and cases. Back in Florence, that observation became a practical idea: pair local leatherworking and materials with an elegant, travel-minded point of view.
The House expanded from luggage into a broader vocabulary of design. Durable canvas and the Diamante motif appeared in the late 1930s; the Bamboo 1947 bag turned an unexpected material into a recognizable handle; and the 1953 Horsebit loafer carried an equestrian code into everyday dress.
A useful way to choose
Start with the scent profile, not the bottle color
Packaging can carry an archive story, but the better buying decision begins with what you enjoy smelling. The three current formats below move from fruit-forward florals to bright woods and an airy vanilla floral. Treat the descriptions as a map, then let a skin test—not concentration or marketing language—make the final call.
