From Lip Kit to Beauty Brand: The Kylie Cosmetics Story

Conceptual beauty editorial with clear gloss and nude and ginger matte pigment sweeps

Kylie Cosmetics began with a focused idea: turn one recognizable lip look into a small, ready-to-use kit. That narrow starting point became the foundation for a much broader makeup brand.

A lip routine becomes a product idea

In 2015, Kylie Jenner introduced three Kylie Lip Kits, each pairing a liquid lipstick with a matching liner. Contemporary interviews and Coty’s later brand history point to the same spark: followers repeatedly asked about the pink-brown matte shades Jenner wore, and the first collection translated that familiar look into a coordinated format.

The original proposition was unusually easy to understand. Instead of assembling separate pieces, the customer could start with a shade and its companion liner. By February 2016, Jenner was publicly using the name Kylie Cosmetics and speaking about expanding beyond lips into a fuller makeup wardrobe.

From a small launch to a wider system

The assortment grew, but the organizing idea remained personal and direct: recognizable looks, clearly named finishes, and products presented through the founder’s own makeup preferences. The brand describes that approach as a way to give its audience access to the products behind those looks.

A new phase began when Coty announced a strategic partnership in 2019 and completed its majority investment in January 2020. The partnership paired Jenner’s creative role with Coty’s product-development, manufacturing, distribution, and international capabilities. In 2021, the line relaunched with reformulated products, refreshed packaging, and broader global distribution.

What makes the story useful now

The most enduring part of the Kylie Cosmetics story is not its scale; it is the clarity of the first decision. One familiar routine became one focused product concept, then expanded only after customers understood what the brand was offering.

That same logic can simplify shopping today. Decide whether you want shine or matte, then move from lighter nude to warmer brown. The choice becomes less about collecting everything and more about identifying the finish and color you will actually wear.

The lasting idea

Kylie Cosmetics grew by making a specific beauty preference legible: a coordinated lip look, a clear finish, and a shade choice. For a first-time shopper, that remains the best way in—choose the texture that suits your routine, then the color direction that feels most natural to wear.
