Inside Yankee Candle
Yankee Candle: fragrance across everyday spaces
A handmade Christmas gift in Massachusetts became the start of a fragrance business built around place, mood and memory.
The founding story begins with one candle, made at home, and the neighbor who asked to buy another.

A gift, then a second candle
In the brand’s own account, sixteen-year-old Mike Kittredge melted crayons to make a Christmas candle for his mother in 1969. A neighbor asked to buy one, and the proceeds paid for enough wax to make two more: one to give and one to sell.
That modest exchange is the useful center of the Yankee Candle origin story—not a laboratory breakthrough, but a personal gift that found an audience.
From workshop to fragrance lab
The business grew in western Massachusetts and expanded from candles into home and car fragrance. Today, Newell describes a South Deerfield research team that evaluates fragrance oils and develops combinations of vessel, wax, oil, color and wick, with a separate burn lab for testing.
The company has changed owners over time, but the editorial thread remains consistent: fragrance as a way to give ordinary rooms, drives and rituals a more particular sense of place.
One scent can suggest a beach walk, a coral sunset or a darker summer night; the format decides where that atmosphere lives.
