The power of a demonstration

Estée Lauder began selling skincare and makeup in beauty salons, demonstrating products while customers sat under hair dryers. Her approach was personal: let people experience the formula and build a relationship through the encounter.

In 1946, Estée and her husband Joseph officially launched the company. The following year brought its first major Saks Fifth Avenue order, an early step from hands-on selling toward a much wider audience.

A lasting beauty vocabulary

That combination of persistence, sampling and personal service became part of the brand’s identity. Skincare, makeup and fragrance grew within the same world of beauty and self-expression.

Today, discovering an Estée Lauder product connects with that original conviction that the experience matters. The texture, finish and small ritual of application are part of what turns a formula into something familiar.
