Vote Yes to Your Skin

This time of year, we spend a little more time thinking about our choices. What matters to us? What do we want for the future? Who do we want representing us in office?

Somewhere between those big questions, the ordinary day carries on. There are groceries to collect, messages to answer, and a laundry pile that appears to have started its own expansion project.

And then there is you.

The person who keeps making room for everything else could use a little room, too.

So here is a small invitation for the season: vote yes to your skin.

Put yourself on the list

You know the list. The one with work, errands, appointments, and that thing you remembered just as you were falling asleep.

Add one more line: a few minutes for yourself.

It might be washing your face before the sofa becomes too convincing. Taking your time with the routine you already have. Or finally looking at your bathroom shelf and asking, “Which of these do I actually use?”

The bottle hiding behind three other bottles would appreciate being included in the conversation.

Choose what earns a place on your shelf

A crowded shelf can turn a small daily ritual into a surprisingly complicated decision.

Give yourself five minutes to take stock. Pick up the products you already own. Check their directions and expiry or period-after-opening guidance. Think about which steps fit comfortably into your day and which purchases you made because someone else's routine looked convincing.

Before adding anything new, ask three simple questions:

  • What job would this have in my routine?
  • Do I already own something for that step?
  • Will I realistically make time to use it as directed?

Keep those answers in mind when you shop. A thoughtful choice can be one well-chosen item, a useful replacement, or simply deciding to enjoy what is already there.

Make one small promise you can keep

Choose a habit that fits an ordinary Tuesday.

Perhaps you will give your evening routine a place in the schedule before you sit down. Perhaps you will keep your everyday products together so they are easier to find. Perhaps you will stop saving a favorite for an imaginary occasion when the calendar is finally clear.

That occasion has been rescheduled several times. Tonight is available.

Write down your one small intention and put it somewhere you will see it. Leave room to adjust it when life gets busy.

A little care belongs in the everyday

However you spend this season, there is room for a moment that belongs to you: a clean towel, your familiar routine, and a few minutes before the next thing needs your attention.

Vote yes to making that moment. Vote yes to your skin.
