You have shampooed, applied a mask, and waited. Should conditioner come next? Start with the directions on your exact formula: a rinse-out moisture mask and a leave-in repair treatment can need very different steps.
Do you need conditioner after a hair mask?
Not always. A mask designed to replace conditioner usually takes its place for that wash. A leave-in treatment may ask you to skip conditioner beforehand, then allow it afterward. Check the product’s sequence before adding another step.

Does every hair mask replace conditioner?
No. Some conditioning masks are intended to replace it, while other treatments have their own sequence. Look for an explicit instruction rather than deciding from the word “mask.”
Should I use a mask before or after conditioner?
Follow the exact formula. In the two examples above, the rinse-out masque replaces conditioner, while the leave-in treatment asks you to skip conditioner before application. If you use conditioner afterward with the leave-in treatment, wait the full four minutes first.
How often should I use a hair mask?
Use the manufacturer’s schedule. A weekly conditioning mask and a treatment used for an initial series of washes have different routines. More frequent use is not automatically better.
Can I leave a rinse-out mask in overnight?
Do not turn a rinse-out product into an overnight treatment unless its directions explicitly allow that use. Rinse at the instructed time.
What if the directions on my bottle are different?
Check the exact formula, size, and current manufacturer guidance. Packaging and instructions can vary; do not borrow a routine from a different product just because the names sound similar.
