A rinse-off face mask generally goes before moisturizer, after cleansing and before you finish your routine. For a tissue-off or overnight formula, read its own directions: the word “mask” does not establish one layering rule. Some instructions explicitly say to moisturize afterward; others specify applying the mask to clean skin without prescribing another cream. The three examples below show why the removal method matters.
Start with the removal instructions
Before deciding where a mask fits, look for the verb that tells you what to do with it:
- Rinse off: remove the mask with water after its stated contact time, then follow its next-step instructions.
- Tissue off: remove as directed with a tissue. This is a different instruction from rinsing.
- Leave overnight: follow that formula’s evening application and morning removal directions.
These are three different approaches, not three stages to combine. Choose the format that fits the time and routine you actually want.
Three masks, three ways to use them
Dermalogica MultiVitamin Power Recovery Masque
2.5 fl oz / 75 mL · Rinse off, then moisturize
This is the clearest mask-before-moisturizer example. Apply generously to cleansed face and throat, avoiding the eyes. After 10–15 minutes, rinse thoroughly with warm water, then follow with moisturizer. The manufacturer recommends weekly use or as needed.
The order is explicit: cleanse, apply the mask, rinse, moisturize. You do not need to guess whether the cream should sit underneath it. If a timed treatment followed by your usual moisturizing step is what you are looking for, these directions provide that structure. Keep the stated contact time rather than turning it into an overnight treatment. Read the rinse-off mask directions.
Origins Drink Up 10 Minute Hydrating Mask
2.5 fl oz / 75 mL · Tissue off after 10 minutes
The official directions for this ten-minute formula say to massage it onto clean skin, wait 10 minutes and tissue off. They suggest twice-weekly use or as desired. Notice that the removal instruction is tissue off, rather than a rinse-and-moisturize sequence.
Those directions do not establish that the mask replaces moisturizer, nor do they instruct you to leave this formula overnight. If you want to add a separate cream, check the instructions on your pack or ask the manufacturer how to fit it into your routine. A similar product name is not enough to transfer another mask’s method. Read the ten-minute mask instructions.
IMAGE Skincare VITAL C Hydrating Overnight Masque
2 oz / 57 g · Leave overnight, rinse in the morning
For this gel-textured overnight option, apply a thick, even layer to cleansed skin in the evening. Leave it on overnight and rinse with lukewarm water the next morning. The stated frequency is two or three times weekly, or as needed.
The manufacturer specifies cleansed skin; it does not prescribe putting this mask over moisturizer. That makes it different from a routine that explicitly tells you to apply cream first. Follow the formula’s instructions without assuming it must be layered over another product or that it replaces every night cream for every person. Read the overnight mask directions.
Do overnight masks always go after moisturizer?
No single order applies to every overnight mask. Some brand routines do specify moisturizer first, followed by an overnight mask when extra hydration is wanted; this hydration guide’s overnight routine is one example. That does not change the clean-skin directions for the overnight product shown above.
Use the instructions for the exact formula in your hand. If they do not explain how it fits with another product, ask rather than filling the gap with a universal layering chart.
A quick check before masking
Read four details together: what skin to apply it to, how long to leave it on, how to remove it and how often to use it. Setting a timer can help you follow a timed mask’s instructions without watching the clock.
For a new product, small-area testing should respect its normal contact time. If it causes a reaction, wash it off and stop using it; severe or unresolved reactions warrant a dermatologist’s advice. See the guidance on testing skincare products.
Common face-mask questions
Can I leave a ten-minute mask on overnight?
Do not extend its contact time simply because you want more hydration. Use the duration and removal method specified for that formula; choose an overnight formula if that is the routine you want.
Does tissue off mean rinse off?
No. They are different removal instructions. Check the exact mask’s label instead of automatically substituting water for a tissue.
Should every face mask be used nightly?
No. The examples here have different schedules. An overnight contact time does not, by itself, mean an every-night frequency.
Choose by the directions: a timed rinse-off treatment, a tissue-off treatment or an overnight formula. Then follow that mask’s specific moisturizer guidance.
